Amidst all this, the place of honour belongs to the Palio, the most popular event in Siena. The Palio is a timeless, irreplaceable tradition, the very symbol of the Senese people. It is an exciting competition where the horses of each contrada race for victory. Every contrada is a distinct community, with its own church, museum, and social life.

The Palio takes place twice a year: on July 2nd and on August 16th.

The Senese people live for the Palio and for their contrada, which becomes much like a second home.
